Understanding Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) & Support Services

An acquired brain injury (ABI) refers to a type of brain injury that individuals sustain after birth, rather than being present due to congenital or genetic disorders. ABIs can be categorized into two primary categories:

  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI): TBIs result from external impacts to the head, such as accidents or falls. These incidents are classified as events that occur externally and can lead to brain injury.

  • Non-Traumatic Brain Injury: Non-traumatic brain injuries are the result of medical events, such as strokes, brain tumours, or meningitis, which affect the brain. These occurrences are categorized as internal events.

Clients dealing with an acquired brain injury may also require airway management support, depending on the complexity of their condition. These clients are designated as ‘level one’ and undergo clinical reviews every two weeks.

How Can We Help

At Leader Care, we collaborate with a diverse clientele encompassing a wide spectrum of needs. Many of our clients have experienced brain injuries falling into either category, leading to profound losses across multiple dimensions of their lives, including physical, cognitive, social, and vocational aspects. The associated trauma can significantly impact an individual’s overall health and well-being. Leader Care possesses deep insight into these challenges and specializes in enhancing the quality of life for clients who are grappling with these issues.

Some clients with acquired brain injuries may be mobile and not require clinical interventions, yet they still seek social support to engage with the community, manage administrative tasks, and participate in social activities.

Consequently, our skilled workforce can offer enabling care as well as short- or long-term support for clients. WHAT OUR SERVICES USERS SAY

I have worked with many care agency companies in my role, and I currently think this agency is the best I have worked with for a long time. The managers are very experienced and professional, and the quality of staff is high. Staff are experienced and well trained with a good understanding of client’s needs. The occasional staff member has not been up to standard, and the agency have taken prompt action to change workers or provide further training. Clients and staff needs are considered and any issues are investigated and managed well. Communication with managers is excellent.

Yorkshire Care have been looking after my daughter Emma since February this year. Having dealt with other agencies previously I can honestly say that the company is very professional, and will go out of their way to ensure that all shifts are covered with the right calibre of nurse.

All the nurses we have met have been really good and have interacted extremely well with my daughter.
