Locked-In Syndrome

Locked-in syndrome (LIS) is a medical condition that usually results after suffering a stroke. The person affected is rendered quadriplegic, and cannot produce speech or facial movements, or communicate. People with locked-in syndrome are still aware of their surroundings however. Sufferers can hear and see, and have normal intelligence and reasoning ability despite their condition.

Whilst there is no established form of treatment or care for locked-in syndrome, our carers play vital roles in improving quality of life. Bespoke support and a flexible approach to care mean we can actively help clients and their families deal with the challenges that the medical condition brings.

Strategising and planning are both important parts of our service. We collaborate with clinical teams and other health care professionals to devise a bespoke home care package that fits the client’s needs. Thanks to our knowledge and understanding, we can select and supply the right carers to deliver the daily support those with locked-in syndrome need.

Our specialist carers can assist with the following tasks to unlock optimum well-being and quality of life:

  • Tracheostomy care
  • Ventilation support
  • Nutritional support (including nasogastric and PEG feeding)
  • Emotional help to both the client and their loved ones

As well as having the training, experience and qualifications needed to provide the above support, all carers undergo training specific to the client to ensure the care given complements the client’s personality, relieves or manages their symptoms, and supports their daily needs, regardless of the severity of their condition.
